2019 was a year of exciting challenges and growth for the outwords archive. Following on the publication of our interview anthology the book of pride, and the launch of our custom digital storytelling site, we hit some financial challenges leading to temporary staff cutbacks. This difficult time, however, also allowed us to reposition our organization for the future, and build a stronger infrastructure for the long run. We expanded our national board of directors to five people. In February 2020, we added two new staff members, and were able to keep them on payroll even as covid 19 struck. Outwords secured funding in 2019 from a wide variety of corporations, foundations, and governmental agencies including microsoft, gilead, the david bohnett foundation, the out fund, the city and county of los angeles, the california arts council, and the california state library. Lastly, in response to the covid 19 pandemic, outwords completely revamped its interview format from in-person to online/virtual. We are well positioned for growth in all areas as we head into the last part of 2020 and the first half of 2021.

The outwords archive captures, preserves, and shares the stories of lgbtq elders, to build community and catalyze social change. To date, outwords has recorded more than 150 in-depth interviews in 27 states. We record the stories of both recognized national leaders and unsung heroes. We delve into a deep variety of ethnic, cultural, economic, educational, and geographic communities, to ensure a rich, varied, and inclusive portrait of the people who led the lgbtq civil rights movement from the beginning. We distribute these stories through our award-winning interview anthology the book of pride, published by harper collins in May 2019; our completely free digital storytelling site, theoutwordsarchive.Org; and through a wide variety of online and in-person programs. Our stories have special relevance for lgbtq youth, providing them with education, inspiration, an awareness of their history, a connection to the queer grandparents they never had, and practical tools to help them make a dif
